Nan’s Tamarillo Chutney

Nan’s Tamarillo Chutney

Our Family Favourite

This one is a family gem straight from Nikki (our founder)'s Mum's kitchen. Perfect for slathering on Superseed Crackers, jazzing up cheese platters, or adding a zing to cold meats.

Ingredients
  • 2 kgs tamarillos, peeled and roughly chopped
  • 4 onions, chopped
  • 4 apples, peeled and chopped
  • 6 cups brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp salt
  • 2 cups malt vinegar
  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper – optional
  • 1 Tbsp mixed spice

Method
  1. Cover tamarillos with boiling water in a heatproof bowl. After 2 minutes, remove the tamarillos one at a time, pierce the skin, and it will peel off easily.
  2. Roughly chop them into about 12 pieces.
  3. Combine tamarillos, onions, apples, brown sugar, salt, vinegar, cayenne and mixed spice in a large pot.
  4. Simmer for 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
  5. Transfer into sterilised jars and seal.
